La Chambre, (The Chamber) 2006
"La Chambre" is an intimate photographic series that refers as much to the camera used as to the unity of place in which the action takes place : a small Parisian studio.
(note : in french, a "chambre" is a bedroom, and a "chambre photographique" is a view camera)
The empty space of this apartment, all in length, was used as an experimental ground for the realization of the portrait of 17 people according to their indications. So, before each shot, my guests had given me clues about the environment that would best represent them.
From that point on, I interpreted their wishes by building small ephemeral architectures with poor materials. Knowing that it would be an aesthetic and human adventure each time different, I wanted it to have a visual unity. I systematically used scotch, wood, and moving boxes illustrated by the naive and heady image of a house and a sun.
As my guest discovered the theatre in which he would play his own role, I sometimes briefly exchanged with them, but very quickly we knew that this discussion was worth being brief, because we should not overload the action with words.
